Frequently asked questions

Questions? You're in good company.

There's no pressure to have everything figured out before we talk. Here are the things teens and parents ask most.

For teens

What if I don't know what I'm interested in? +

That's completely okay. Many teens come to their session feeling uncertain or overwhelmed. We'll explore your interests, strengths, and possibilities together. You don't need to have everything figured out before we meet.

How do I figure out what I want to do? +

You don't need to have your entire future planned out by 14, 16, or even 18. The goal isn't to choose one perfect path — it's to explore possibilities, learn more about yourself, and take the next step with confidence.

Together, we'll discuss your interests, strengths, values, and goals while exploring opportunities that align with who you are and who you want to become.

I don't have connections. Can I still find great opportunities? +

Absolutely. Not everyone grows up hearing about the same scholarships, summer programs, internships, or career opportunities — and that's okay.

I created Teen Opportunity Navigator because I believe every teen deserves access to opportunities that help them learn, grow, and discover what's possible. My goal is to make those opportunities easier to discover so you can focus on exploring what excites you.

What if I'm shy or nervous? +

That's okay too. Over the past 20+ years, I've worked with students from many different backgrounds, personalities, and life experiences — some outgoing, some quiet or nervous about the future.

My goal isn't to pressure you or have all the answers. It's to create a comfortable, judgment-free space where you feel heard, supported, and excited to explore what's possible.

What if I have too many interests? +

That's a great problem to have! Together, we'll explore different possibilities, identify common themes, and talk about opportunities that align with multiple interests. You don't have to choose just one thing right now.

Will you tell me what career to choose? +

No. My goal isn't to tell you what you should do. It's to help you discover opportunities, ask questions, and build confidence in making your own decisions.

What will I leave the session with? +

You'll leave with new ideas, personalized recommendations, and a clearer sense of what to explore next. Within a few days, you'll also receive your Teen Opportunity Guide with opportunities and resources tailored to your interests.

For parents

Is this college counseling? +

No. While college may be part of the conversation, this is broader than college counseling. We'll explore careers, opportunities, skills, and experiences that fit who your teen is and where they want to go.

Is this only for students who want to go to college? +

Not at all. I work with teens who are considering college, trade school, entrepreneurship, gap years, military service, or who simply aren't sure yet. The goal is to explore possibilities and find paths that feel meaningful and exciting.

My teen is shy or anxious. Will this still work? +

Probably! Over the past 20+ years, I've worked with students of many different personalities and life experiences. My goal is to create a comfortable, judgment-free space where teens feel heard, supported, and excited to explore what's possible.

My teen doesn't have extracurriculars. Is it too late? +

Absolutely not. There are many ways to get involved, build skills, and explore interests. We'll talk about opportunities that fit your teen's goals, schedule, and comfort level.

Do parents attend? +

Parents are welcome to help book the session. Depending on the teen's preference, parents may join part of the conversation or allow their teen to meet independently. My goal is always to center the teen's voice while creating a comfortable experience for everyone involved.

Are sessions virtual? +

Yes. Sessions take place online so teens can participate from anywhere in the United States.

What ages do you work with? +

I primarily work with high school students.

How long does it take to receive the Teen Opportunity Guide? +

You'll receive your teen's personalized Teen Opportunity Guide by email within a few days after the session.
